Madhumita Bhattacharya

Kolkota, West Bengal, India | 1968

For Madhumita Bhattacharya the teachings of Buddha and lessons of Dalai Lama of finding one’s inner joy and peace has been a constant point of examination in her practice. As a self-taught artist, Madhumita has kept herself constantly motivated to follow her passion for art. Anchoring her practice is her faith in Buddha, which propelled through her travels as a child to places like Bhutan, Nepal, Shillong and Dhramshala.

Your style of art ...

I believe in realistic art. I like to keep things simple. My work is largely figurative and inspired by the calm, peaceful nature of Buddha. In terms of mediums, I practice oil painting. It is my forte. This medium gives me time to delve completely into my work, and it takes almost a month to finish one piece of artwork.

What does art mean to you?

Art is my meditation. It is my worship. I look at art as a medium of self-realisation. In fact, my life and my art go in sync; they enrich and inspire each other. I hope to spread this positive feel with my work.

Your art process ...

Painting the Buddha comes naturally to me. However, every painting I create is inspired by my thoughts and dreams. I do start by visualising my work, but more often than not I allow the natural flow to take charge.
