Yuvraj Patil, a charcoal artist plays with simple, yet striking lines, shapes and shadows. He believes the world is a distinctive play of Black & White, with each shade adding an important flavour to our life.
Sometimes, lifting his world of black and white you’ll find an occasional throw of striking colour. A student of Kalaniketan Mahavidyalaya, Kolhapur and with an advanced training in Dalvi’s art institute, Kolhapur along with Bharti Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune, Yuvraj has been part of prominent art collections and art promotional institutions all over the country.
Your practice is inspired by ...
I believe ‘black and white’ colours are simple. They don’t carry the glamour or the razzmatazz of other colours. Yet, when placed creatively they can bring in a dramatic chaos that enlivens one’s senses and imagination. It’s this play of untold colours of black and white, which inspires me to explore the depths of life and people around us. I practice this through the styles of landscapes, semi-abstract, abstract, still life and figurative paintings.
Your take on colours ...
It’s no surprise that I see colours largely from a palate of black and white. I understand that black is associated with power, fear, elegance, formality, death, evil and rebellion; while, white stands for the reverse attributes. But, beyond these descriptions, I believe that both colours gain strength from each other. And, isn’t life all about that – drawing strengths from all the good and bad around us?
A word on art ...
The concept of art begins in the artist’ mind and it evolves with the passage of time. We can find these concepts all around us. That’s why my work is largely a depiction of scenes based on everyday life of ordinary people, nomadic tribes, carnivals, landscapes and historic structures.
